iMinds, Flanders’ digital research centre, has launched the “City of Things” project in the Belgium city of Antwerp last year. About a year ago iMinds, several universities and IT businesses have teamed up to roll out a network of sensors in Antwerp. This network can make for instance footpaths, roads and utilities “intelligent”. The generated information will help to facilitate the resident’s or visitor’s life. Today the city is equipped with sensors and the first projects are being developed.
City of Things research tracks include the development of new network technologies to efficiently connect sensors to the Internet, translating large amounts of data (from those sensors) into knowledge, and gathering and applying user insights to turn that knowledge into innovative products and services. This project pays also attention to the rules of play regarding privacy, ethics and open cooperation.
