The LoRa Alliance, a boost for home automation?

The LoRa alliance includes many industry leaders and operators like IBM, Sagemcom, Cisco, Bouyges Telecom, Swisscom, IMST, Eolane, Microchip, MultiTech and Semtech. In January 2015 Proximus became also member of the alliance.

The LoRa alliance wishes to develop a worldwide standard for low power wide area networks (LPWAN) and ensure interoperability between the telecom operators. The LoRa technology (“Long Range, Low power”, long distance radio transceiver technology) allows devices to connect to the internet over long distances with very low energy consumption.

Devices that are connected to the LoRa network transmit or receive messages at pre-established times to/from the Internet via this network and then go back to ‘sleep’. The network could be used for home automation, intelligent street lighting systems, intelligent refrigerators connected to the internet, etc. Devices using the LoRa technology are very low in consumption and more flexible because no wires are needed.
